In the bathroom at port authority in Port of Spain, there is a sign drawn very neatly in multi-coloured felt pen which says "please flush toilets!" with a pretty pattern all around the border.
Under that someone has written "buy new locks!" in ballpoint pen. Felt pen has scribbled in below that, "FLUSH THE TOILETS!" and ballpoint has written even smaller "not until you buy new locks!"
I am not making this up. It was a moment worthy of Douglas Adams. If I had had a pen myself, I would have written "and toilet paper!" along the edge where there was still room. AND! There was another, identical sign in the other stall. I checked. Don't you just love Trinis?
This website was invented many years ago, when the author kept coming across interesting things in pockets whilst doing laundry. Like small, terrified reptiles. Blogging about raising children in the rainforest, moving them to the UK and watching them leave home one by one to have their own adventures has gradually been replaced by a return to grownup life for their mother, Nan Sheppard, who is an anthropologist, writer and public international law consultant.
